Euphemisms are linguistic tools used to soften harsh realities and sensitive subjects, playing a significant role in literature, particularly in the works of O. Henry. Known for his wit, humor, and twist endings, O. Henry employs euphemisms to navigate complex themes such as poverty, mortality, and social injustice without alienating his audience. This article explores the usage of euphemisms in O. Henry's stories, illustrating how they contribute to character development and thematic depth. By analyzing selected stories, the study reveals the multifaceted role of euphemisms in enriching the narrative while maintaining an engaging and light-hearted tone. A qualitative research method is employed, focusing on textual analysis of O. Henry's works. The analysis identifies various euphemisms, categorizing them based on their context and significance within the stories. A table scheme is utilized to present examples of euphemisms alongside their meanings and contexts, facilitating a clear understanding of their usage. The findings indicate that euphemisms not only enhance the reader's emotional experience but also prompt reflection on underlying social issues. This article contributes to the understanding of O. Henry's literary style, emphasizing the importance of language in storytelling and social commentary.
