TO THE QUESTION OF THE TYPOLOGY OF DECORATION FOR PLAITS OF THE KARAKALPAK

This article summarizes the materials on the decoration for plaits of the Karakalpak women and proposes their typology, discusses the origin of some types of decoration for plaits, their development and functionality, traces the connection of some types of decoration for plaits with hairstyles and conducts a comparative analysis with the decorations of neighboring peoples. The sources for the article were information found in the literature, field materials, as well as exhibits of the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after I.V.Savitsky. The author distinguishes the main two types of traditional Karakalpak decoration for plaits and various sub-types. Decoration for plaits as a whole are an important element of the female image, which has a utilitarian and sacred meaning.
