The article discusses scientific approaches to the study of the organization of professionally-oriented independent work of students. Special attention is paid to such approaches as systemic, personality-oriented, competence-based, activity-based, information-communication and problem-project. Each of them reveals certain aspects of the organization of independent work of students in the context of professional training. The complex use of these approaches contributes to more effective formation of professional competencies, the development of motivation for learning and readiness for future professional activity. The article's materials can be useful for teachers, methodologists, and researchers who are engaged in modernizing the educational process at universities.
