METHODS FOR SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS IN PRIMARY GRADES

Abstract

This article explores the educational significance of mathematics, highlighting its role in developing logical thinking, strategic decision-making, and analytical skills. It notes that solving word problems helps students acquire mathematical knowledge and practical skills while enhancing their logical reasoning. The article defines word problems, examining their types and structure. It then provides a detailed analysis of the problem-solving stages: understanding the problem's content, identifying known and unknown quantities and their relationships, selecting appropriate arithmetic operations, and formulating guiding questions. Various methods for solving word problems are discussed, including schematic methods (using a brief record or a line segment diagram), creating tables, and using models (such as with sticks). Each method is illustrated with examples and their solutions. Didactic methods like analysis, synthesis, and transformation are also covered. The article lists common errors made when solving problems and concludes with a summary of findings.
